Key findings

Fictional satire: these points describe the article’s themes and imagined scenes, not actual statements, verified events, or findings of wrongdoing.

  • The press release, spokesperson, support dialogue and satirical feature names are invented—not official announcements or evidence of misconduct.
  • Coinbase documents authorized AI trading through Advanced Trade, with client-specific controls; separate agent portfolios are limited to spot crypto.
  • Prompt injection and vague instructions are potential risks, not proof of a successful exploit. Financial figures are attributed to the linked October 23 report.
AI-generated fictional satire: a robot feeds a coin into an elaborate fee machine beside an emergency stop button and a long receipt. Not an actual Coinbase product.
AI-generated conceptual illustration, labeled fictional satire—not a real product, interface or evidence of misconduct.

Fictional satire—not an actual Coinbase announcement. The spokesperson, support-team dialogue, mission statement, invented feature names, pricing jokes and analyst punchlines below are imagined. They do not establish actual fees, outages, misconduct, customer losses or a security breach. The factual background and product limitations are separated in the source notes below.

SAN FRANCISCO (Remote-First, Technically) In this fictional press release, Coinbase unveiled its refreshed mission: to increase economic freedom in the world, one “Simple Trade Fee” at a time.

“We believe everyone deserves access to the financial system of the future,” said an imaginary spokesperson, “and we believe everyone deserves to pay a spread, a convenience fee, and a Coinbase fee, which is different from the other two, for reasons we're proud of.”

New features include (some real concepts, all descriptions below satirically exaggerated):

  • Coinbase for AI Agents: Why risk losing money on your own bad decisions when a chatbot can lose it for you, around the clock? Connect ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, or another supported AI, and let it place real trades in your account from the comfort of a single conversation.
  • Vibes-Based Order Sizing: Tell your agent to buy “a little crypto” and let it decide what “a little” means. If it decides “a little” is your rent, that's called user accountability.
  • Prompt Injection Experience™: In this deliberately exaggerated scenario, hidden text on a webpage whispers instructions to your trading bot. It's the fictional brokerage feature where a stranger's footnote tries to place an order on your behalf.
  • Safety Guidance: Coinbase recommends opening a separate portfolio for your AI agent and funding it only with money you're willing to risk. Our imaginary marketing department translates that as “assume you'll lose this.”
  • Order Previews and an Off Switch: Safeguards so robust that you can watch your agent make the mistake in real time, then disconnect it afterward, like locking the barn once the horse has bought a memecoin.
  • Coinbase Instant™: Your money arrives instantly. Withdrawing it, however, is a “journey.” This invented slogan is not a statement of actual deposit or withdrawal timing.
  • Coinbase One: In our imaginary advertisement, $29.99 a month buys zero trading fees on the trades you were going to make anyway. Savings are calculated using a proprietary formula we cannot share. The price and terms in this joke are not a current subscription quote.
  • Volatility Mode: When the market moves fast, our fictional app takes a moment of quiet reflection, usually exactly when you need it most. Now your AI agent can reflect right alongside it.
  • Account Safeguard: Our imaginary system will lock your account for your protection, then connect you with our award-winning support team. Estimated wait: a few business eternities.
  • Self-Custody Reminder: “Not your keys, not your coins” is a phrase we encourage you to read, absorb, and then hand over to a chatbot with trading permissions.

On the business case: The October 23, 2026 24/7 Wall St. report says Q2 2026 revenue fell 18.5% from a year earlier and consumer transaction revenue fell 20%. It reports that Brian Armstrong described agentic finance as early, without specific forecasts, and that Coinbase had not yet reported revenue from these agents. Those are attributed reporting points, not a claim that the feature earns nothing. Our invented analysts called it “a bold strategy: fix the fee decline by adding a new kind of user error.”

A word from our imaginary support team:

“We understand your concern. Please open a ticket. Your ticket has been received. Please open a new ticket to follow up on your ticket. We've closed your ticket because we haven't heard from you. Have you tried asking your AI agent to fix it? It may have caused it.”

On transparency: In the parody, Coinbase remains committed to being the most trusted name in crypto, a title we selected from a shortlist of titles we also held the pen on.

Asked how the company plans to rebuild trust with users, the imaginary spokesperson said, “We're so glad you asked. Please see our fee schedule, last updated Tuesday. Our agents have already read it.”

Coinbase was not consulted for this parody. No affiliation, endorsement or actual company response is implied.

Source notes: what is real, and what is a joke

  • The product: Coinbase's Coinbase MCP documentation describes authorized access for supported AI clients to trading, portfolio management and paid research. Availability depends on the account, asset, jurisdiction and client. It does not authorize every chatbot or arbitrary webpage to trade.
  • Fees: The documentation says orders execute through Coinbase Advanced Trade, so Advanced Trade fees and eligibility requirements apply. The opening joke is not a verified description of three fees being charged together. Coinbase One pricing, fee waivers, spreads and exclusions must be checked against the current applicable terms.
  • Permissions and isolation: Coinbase recommends a separate, limited-risk portfolio. Its documentation says isolated agent portfolios apply to spot crypto only; U.S. derivatives are available only in the default portfolio. A separate portfolio is therefore not a universal safeguard across every product.
  • Controls and risk: The linked report describes order previews and disconnection controls. Current documentation describes client-specific differences in previews and confirmation, and gives instructions to revoke a connection. An off switch does not reverse an executed trade. Prompt injection and ambiguous instructions are potential risks, not evidence that a particular exploit has happened or bypassed Coinbase's authorization controls.
  • Financial figures: The Q2 2026 figures and earnings-call characterization above are attributed to Sam Daodu's October 23 report, not independently audited here. “Not yet reported” is not the same as zero revenue, and Q2 is identified rather than loosely described as the latest quarter.
  • The parody: “Vibes-Based Order Sizing,” “Prompt Injection Experience,” “Volatility Mode,” the fictional support exchange and the other invented slogans are not official products, promises or company quotations. Account restrictions, outages and withdrawal delays are not established by this article.
